Nursing has been an exciting and lifelong journey for me. Since I was a young girl, I knew I wanted to be a nurse. One month after graduating from high school I started nursing school to become a licensed practical nurse. I worked the obligatory year and started the nursing program at Ferris State College. Marriage and children found me very busy for several years. When my youngest child started school I decided I would also. I enrolled in the program at the University of Michigan and graduated with honors. I was proud to become a Bachelor's degree prepared nurse and also proud to show my children how important education is, no matter what age you are. Now I find myself with my last child in college and am ready to begin this journey.
I have worked in a variety of nursing specialties since my graduation. Orthopedics, Urology, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Neonatal Intensive Care nursing have all given me a strong background in this great profession. In each position I have strived to be a caring and knowledgeable nurse. I have also worked hard to be a leader in these positions. Each one was a unique steppingstone in my career.
Currently I am working as a Pre-Admission planner in the Advanced Registration and Testing Center at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Michigan. My knowledge and experience from years of specialty nursing is the backbone for my success in this department. On a daily basis I meet with patients who are in a stressful time of their life. They are undergoing surgery, invasive testing or diagnostic procedures. I strive to be knowledgeable, professional and calm to help their experience be as positive as possible. This position allows me to interact with patients both as a nurse and a teacher. While I obtain health histories and order testing, I also have the opportunity to teach them about their procedures and how to care for themselves after. Another aspect of my job is to thoroughly review patient's charts to make sure all testing is complete and histories are available and within guidelines to make their jouney through our hospital as safe as possible. This is very detail oriented and I thrive doing it.
Obtaining this Master's degree will allows me to fulfill both a personal and professional goal. On a personal level, education has always been an important aspect of my life. Learning something new is exciting and nursing has a never-ending array of knowledge that is constantly evolving.
I have tried to instill in my three children the value of education. Continuing my own training in a field that I enjoy hopefully will encourage them to do the same. I am very proud that all three of my children have college degrees. My daughter graduated in 2011 with her Master's degree in Biostatistics. My oldest son returned to school for a law degree Fall 2012. My youngest child just graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. I cannot help but think my feelings on the importance of education along with being a role model for them has encouraged them to do the same.
A Master's degree will also allow me to culminate my professional goal in nursing. I want to be able to teach Nursing Theory in the classroom. My background in a variety of settings coupled with an excitement for the profession will help me fulfill my goal of passing on to another generation the fundamental knowledge and passion of a Nursing career.
